As you all know, my ‘Rangapravesha’ (Graduation in Indian Classical Dance ‘Bharatanaatya’ ) is coming up soon and it is a very important event in my life. I believe that there is no better way to make this event truly special than by raising money for a cause that I strongly believe in and support. Your presence at the event, encouragement and blessings are all I ask for and would respectfully request you all to not offer any gifts or flowers. However, if you insist, in lieu of flowers and gifts, I kindly request you to make a donation to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, to further cancer research and help efforts in constructing more advanced techniques.
The New Jersey cancer incidence rate ranks amoung the worst in the nation. In 2009 alone, 50,000 New Jerseyans recieved a diagnosis of cancer. With more than 80,000 paitent visits annually, CINJ (the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in NJ) meets a critical need. One of the 41 NCI designated cancer treatment centers nationwide, they work towards the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer and provide hospitable care to every cancer patient. The world-class scientists and physicians make cancer discoveries that have changed, and will continue to change, our understanding of cancer.
From a very young age, I have witnessed many friends and close relatives struggle with the disease and the physical and emotional distress that comes along with it. Unfortunately, we still do not have a definite cure for cancer and there are numerous cases in which patients, no matter how determined to overcome it, ultimately do not survive from it. As I grew older, I had the privilege of learning more about cancer through school and extra-curricular programs. Upon grasping an understanding of basic oncological studies, I realized that I wanted to help ongoing research to the best of my abilities, now and in the future. We, as a community, should work together to decrease the amount of cancer-related fatalities, and maybe even find the cure.
I hope you all could take the time to donate to The Cancer Institute of New Jersey through my campaign page. I have set a personal fundraising goal of $1,500, and I would appreciate it if you could join me in this effort in attaining that goal. All proceeds will go towards scientific research.
